This book was such a great read that it had to be reviewed while still fresh from reading it. The wait for book 2 is long enough to drive you batty because you can't just continue and yet close enough you are dying to get your hands on it.. Now how to write a review worthy of it without spoiling it by giving away too much.. So Just In Case I Goof {{***THERE MAYBE SPOILERS AHEAD***}} This book takes the Harry Potter book suitable for tweens and teens and brings forth the story in the Young Adult reading frame. DO NOT MISTAKE ME it is NOT a Harry Potter, it's firmly a different universe but it has the same themes of Good vs Evil both in the overall outlook and the personal clash of characters. It has the academy feel and friendship bonds, and the underdog that sets out to better himself in a world that expects something else. Think Potter without the lightning bolt scar, but comes to earn the scar himself and the expectations that come with it. You boo the bad guys cheer the good laugh at the comedy and gasp at the tragedy. Just when you thing OH RATS HE SET HIMSELF UP.. and then suddenly something else happens that you didn't expect. There are powers and while not spells some form of reaching an inner power and using it. The sad part is had he known at the end when a child his life would have followed a totally different path and the book would have never been near as good. The sexuality is tastefully done so that even a tween and teen can read and understand but while Harry Potter was gasp they Kissed ! This follows older characters and young love in a not shoved in your face or ignored that sex happens means. You smile at yes he gets the Girl, and wins the day and the danger that the following book promises is left looming as to what will happen. The book covers the unfairness of being a subclass to the ease of those handed everything with a silver spoon expecting to have those of the subclass to use as serfs. have I given you enough to wet your appetite or just looking at the buffet and not seeing what you have a taste for. Take a taste I think you, like one of the characters is left always hungry. ;o}This book excels at doing what a book is used for.. it entertains you, keeps you attention from cover to cover in a almost seamless manner. I honestly can't wait to read the next book and have to say VERY WELL DONE to the author Jeffrey L. Kohanek I see a very bright future ahead.

The Buried Symbol Runes of Issalia Jeffrey L Kohanek Books Reviews
I really love the way you've used the Runes to make this book so interesting.
Lots of suspense , action and of course romance . The best part is how a person
who is believed to be beneath the level of others rises to become more than ......
Well you have to read the book to find out more. I'm looking forward to reading book II.
This pulled me in and kept engross in the story till the end. I would class this as a great young adult story that is also enjoyable for adults and as adult (over sixty) I enjoyed book so much I had trouble going to bed I wanted to read the next chapter. The idea of a world that at birth people are marked and this mark then funnels people into their future life positions was sort interesting. But when you add in that some people are not marked and are called the unchosen, that really caught my attention. The young man Brock who is unchosen pays for mark to placed on his forehead. It is not just any mark but the mark of those who those define the rune/symbol of infants. The one who are the minsters of nation. The rest of the story is his first year at school for those with this rune/symbol. The story, for me, did not disappoint but made me want to know what happens next.
The Buried Symbol offers a world where the citizens are split into two castes the chosen and the unchosen. The chosen are those privileged to have a symbol on their foreheads to indicate the kind of special talents that the wearers possess. The unchosen, however, are the untalented masses deemed to be beneath the notice of the chosen class, and without legal rights and protections. The protagonist is an unchosen who became motivated, after a event life event, to obtain the rune, or a facsimile of such, and enroll in a special academy for the young chosen ones.
The most notable aspect of this book is how well developed the author made the protagonist--why the boy turned to thievery, his morals, his compassion, his motivations, and ultimately his belief in doing good for others. The book certainly has similarities to Harry Potter in that there is an academy for magic users and there is initially questions as to whether protagonist belongs there and the MC has to prove himself. The only quibble I would have with the author is his resolution of a rivalry between the MC and his main nemesis; I would have preferred to see the nemesis be around as the main thorn in the MC's side throughout the entire book series, like a Draco Malfoy.
The Buried Symbol is a wonderful YA fantasy story and highly recommended to teenage readers.
This book was a very positive surprise. I bought it somewhat reluctantly, not being a big fan of so called young-adult genre. The first few pages made me worried, too. Though, as I allowed myself to get immersed in the plot all my worries disappeared.
The concept behind the story is quite cliche, but then, are there themes that aren't so? The main character, a youth in his mid-teens is fighting against his fate, which is not that plain and simple as he was told to believe so. Together with his best friend he starts a journey to eventually discover himself.
Sounds like a typical young-adult, right? The execution, though, is splendid. By no means characters are one-dimensional. Even though, they still offer a lot of space for further development they are not irritating or boring. They are sketched skillfully and allow the reader to simply like them (or dislike in the case of black characters.
The story is quick and steady. There are not too many paragraphs that I found boring or redundant.
If I were to say whom the book is for, I would have to admit that any person that is interested in light fantasy will find it to his liking. By no means it is a saga that might overwhelm with overly high number of characters, plots, sub-plots and the like. This book is easy to read and yet, it gives quite a lot of fun. A really good job by Mr. Kohanek.
